THE CASTLE GROUNDS

The Castle Grounds sit at the heart of Rosavelle, perched just uphill from the island's winding canals. It's here that the kingdom itself first took root - before the districts sprawled outward, before the gardens overgrew their borders, and before Rosavelle became the cozy little trade hub it is today. As a result, the castle grounds are larger than you might expect, dotted with the remnants of old homes, forgotten courtyards, and magical gardens that have long been left to the flowers.

At the center of it all stands the castle proper, its balconies wrapped in vines and its spires watching over the island. It's where Princess Calanthe lives, where the royal halls sprawl, and most importantly, where the Everbloom's greenhouse can be found - the glowing, glass-paneled heart of Rosavelle's magic.

The castle itself is every bit as grand as you'd expect from the island's seat of power - sprawling white marble halls, coral-draped balconies, and tall stained glass windows that bathe the corridors in soft hues of gold and pink. It's regal, beautiful, and always bustling with staff keeping the place running... but beneath all the polish, there's an undeniable sense of quiet.

Normally, the grounds would be private, but as invited guests of the sovereign, characters have mostly free reign to explore both the castle and its gardens... within reason. Just try not to wander into any locked doors or ancient crypts without permission. The grounds themselves are high enough to give an incredible view of the island and its surrounding sea, and while it's a heck of a climb up the stairs to get up here, a private royal water taxi is always available to ferry characters back and forth (don't ask how it rows uphill, it just does).

The grounds tend to be quiet compared to the bustling districts below, but there's always something blooming, something hidden, and plenty of space to get lost in.
THE CASTLE

Radiant Hall
The central artery of the castle, the Radiant Hall isn't officially called that, but it certainly lives up to its nickname. The marble floors gleam with inlaid mosaics of flowering vines, while tall stained-glass windows catch the sun and scatter it in blush-pink and golden light across the vaulted ceiling. Grand chandeliers made of coral and crystal sway lightly in the draft from the balcony doors, filling the space with little specks of colour that seem to dart all over the place. The Hall provides access to a majority of the most important locations in the castle so court officials, messengers, and servants are bustling through her constantly. It's kind of chaotic.

The Throne Room
A vast hall of white marble floors polished to a mirror sheen, flanked by columns wound in flowering vines. Above, the ceiling soars high into an arched vault, painted with murals of Calyx blooming in the sky. Rows of tall windows let sunlight pour in, scattering through stained glass into pink, gold, and sea-blue. The throne itself rests on a raised dais, carved of pale coral and inset with gemstones that catch the light. Courtly announcements, seasonal festivals, and the like are all celebrated here so the chamber is often filled with music and laughter. Most importantly of all, a set of grand double doors sit just behind the throne that, when opened, lead right to the Everbloom's greenhouse.

The Hall of Sovereigns
Locked up tight beyond a set of grand double doors near the heart of the palace, the Hall of Sovereigns is a private chamber reserved for the royal family and their closest confidants. Sunlight filters in through stained glass windows depicting Rosavellan history in vivid, rose-hued scenes, casting delicate floral patterns across the polished marble floor. Along the curved walls sit glass cases, each housing a Coronation Crown from generations past. These living crowns, woven from blossoms grown at the Everbloom itself, sit frozen in time, their blooms a testament to triumphs, tragedies, and everything in between. The air here feels reverent, almost heavy, as if the room itself is holding its breath.

Amourian Library
A favourite hiding spot of Callie's, tucked off a sun-drenched corridor near the Hall of Sovereigns. The tall arched windows are framed with climbing roses that bloom year-round, their petals occasionally drifting inside on the breeze. Plush velvet armchairs are scattered around the place and delicate magical lamps hover overhead, casting a warm, steady glow perfect for reading (or napping). The towering shelves are stuffed with an eclectic mix: dusty old volumes on Rosavellan history, dog-eared magical treatises, scholarly essays on botany - and, naturally, an entire wing dedicated to love. From swoony epic romances to etiquette guides on courtly affection, there's something for everyone to page through. Easily one of the quietest corners of the castle… unless someone gets into the romance poetry section, in which case you might hear a dramatic reading or two in the stacks.

The Sunspire Ballroom
If not for the Everbloom's greenhouse, the Ballroom would almost definitely be the jewel of the castle. Marble pillars ring the chamber, their surfaces entwined with gilded floral motifs, and a vast chandelier of rose-cut crystal hangs at its center under a high-domed ceiling painted with a sky.. When empty, the space is almost a little too big, to the point that passing through it is a slightly anxiety inducing affair but on nights of celebration it transforms into a high-energy whirlwind that makes you glad for the excess room to breathe. Rumor has it the polished floor is charmed to never scuff, no matter how many heels and boots sweep across it.

Marigold Dining Room
A surprisingly cozy little dining room… or, well, as cozy and little as you can get at the royal palace. Its round tables of pale marble are trimmed in gilt, small enough to seat a handful of diners comfortably without needing to yell down the table at your seatmates. Coral-hued draperies soften the tall windows, casting the room in warm gold and pink light throughout the day, while polished sconces glow with steady enchantments after dusk. Fresh flowers - often plucked from the palace gardens that very morning - fill low vases along the tables, so the room is always perfumed with the scent of flowers or delicious dishes. This is where the castle's everyday meals are taken and where courtiers, staff, and guests alike can share a meal without the food being overshadowed by the castle's grandeur.

Hearthsong Salon
Now this is more like it! If you're looking for a little bit of quiet time in the castle, the salon is the best place to do it. A cheery little tea room papered in pale florals and hung with gilt-framed mirrors, with light from tall stained-glass windows bathing the space in gentle shades of pink and gold. Low tables are scattered among velvet sofas and carved wooden chairs, each one laid with fresh blossoms and the staff are always present to serve up some tea or some sweet and savory treats if you ask nicely. And there's plenty to do while you're sipping tea! Cabinets along the wall hold neatly arranged sets of cards, board games, and puzzles for anyone looking to test their wit or luck, while shelves brim with lighter reading material - poetry collections, folktales, and illustrated romances. Musicians sometimes drift in to play quietly in the background, though more often the room is filled with the hum of conversation and bursts of laughter.

Stag's Rest Lounge
The Salon's dusky counterpart. Paneled in dark mahogany with brass fixtures that glow under the steady warmth of enchanted lanterns, the lounge carries a mellow, almost conspiratorial atmosphere. Plush leather chairs and low-backed sofas cluster around carved tables, the air scented faintly of pipe smoke, spiced wine, and cedarwood from the hearth. Rather than the cheery games and puzzles of the salon, the Lounge is fitted with a billiards table and a few dartboards. Decanters of fine spirits line the bar in one corner, tended by staff who are quick with a refill but discreet with their ears. The walls are hung with hunting prints and landscapes, softened here and there by trailing ivy. There's windows, but they're draped in heavy velvet that obscures the light from outside and makes it alarmingly easy to lose track of time in here.

Azurite Banquet Hall
In contrast to the slightly more low-key dining room, the Azurite Banquet Hall is where the castle hosts its feasts and celebrations - and you can sure tell! Polished oak tables stretch nearly the length of the room, their surfaces gleaming with intricate carvings of roses and waves. The walls are adorned with enormous tapestries that depict Rosavelle's history through blooms and symbols rather than battles, each one woven with threads that shimmer faintly under candlelight. Even when it's not in use for royal dinners, the hall carries a faint perfume of wine, spiced fruit, and roses from the kitchens beyond.

The Kitchens
Despite the elegance of the castle, the kitchens are warm and unpretentious - a sprawling warren of stone hearths, copper pots, and long prep tables worn smooth by generations of use. The air is always fragrant: bread baking, herbs drying, sauces simmering over low flames. Chefs and assistants move with practiced ease, weaving through the bustle of clattering pans and the occasional courier dropping off rare ingredients. Guests lucky enough to slip inside often find themselves plied with a sweet tart or savory pastry before being gently shooed back into the corridors - that said, if you're really determined to make use of the kitchens, they'll make some room for you… so long as you're happy to pitch in with their work.
THE GREENHOUSE

The Everbloom's greenhouse is the shining jewel of the castle grounds, a vast glass sanctuary built around the kingdom's most sacred blossom. At its center stands the Everbloom itself - a gigantic tree that towers almost to the top of the castle itself, its pale pink petals gleaming with a gentle inner light. The air here hums softly with magic, a low, steady thrumming that you feel in your chest as much as hear.

The greenhouse's arched panes are tinted the palest pink as well, casting everything inside in a warm, rosy glow. Sunlight filtered through the glass makes even the shadows soft and vibrant, and the air inside is always warm and faintly humid - not stifling, but comforting. Flowers of every imaginable variety thrive here, their colors richer and their petals larger than anywhere else on the island thanks to the Everbloom's presence. In the sections of the greenhouse closest to the Everbloom itself, individual flowerbeds mark the Bloom Bonds of Rosavelle's guests and companions, each one nurtured by the Everbloom's magic until it becomes something truly spectacular.

Typically, access is restricted to the current monarch and a handful of trusted scholars but as Callie’s personal guests, you’re trusted to come and go as you please. How nice!
THE BARRACKS

Once the heart of Rosavelle's old military, the Barracks haven't needed to house an army for some generations now. Instead, they've been refurbished to accommodate guests of the royal family - like you!

The buildings themselves are sturdy and symmetrical, built of solid pale stone that's been softened by ivy and flowered trellises. Wide arched windows let in lots of light, while tiled roofs gleam rose-gold at dawn and dusk. They're mostly practical in their construction but the efforts to put some colour and warmth into the place keep the Barracks from feeling too austere.

The grounds are divided into six near-identical residences, each named for a different bloom - Hyacinth, Hydrangea, Forget-me-not, Geranium, Tulip, and Lily - with matching gardens planted out front. Each one contains:
  • Private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms for every resident

  • A shared dining hall and kitchen

  • A cozy common room

  • A small library space stocked with essentials

Each building opens out into a shared courtyard with a fancy fountain, ringed by benches, flowerbeds, and lantern-lit paths. There's also a few quieter spots like shaded porches and tucked-away benches if you're needing a little time to yourself.

A small staff keeps everything running smoothly, tending to meals and upkeep, but the Barracks are otherwise nice and private.

How are there always enough rooms for all the new arrivals, you ask? ...don’t worry about it.
THE GROUNDS

Emberlight Forge
Follow the sound of hammers pounding on metal long enough and you'll come across a wide open-walled structure with a roof of stained glass panels tucked into a sheltered corner of the castle grounds. The forge is fueled as much by Bloomcraft as it is by coal or flame and even though the forge never goes cold, none of the flames ever seem to spread anywhere they shouldn't. Apprentices and seasoned smiths alike can be found shaping everything from simple nails to ceremonial arms, though most of the work here is focused on delicate artistry rather than weaponry. Visitors are welcome, so long as they respect the heat and the craft.

Dawnfield Grounds
A broad stretch of manicured lawns, flower-ringed paths, and open fields kept deliberately clear for physical training and recreation. It's not too far from the castle, so if you're itching to stretch your legs after spending too much time indoors then this is the ideal place to do it. Once upon a time, knights sparred here beneath the banners of the crown, but these days you're just as likely to see nobles and scholars practicing Bloomcraft exercises, racing each other across the grass, or hosting friendly tournaments of fencing and archery. Stone steps circle the grassy areas and provide some seating, and in the evenings the fields glow faintly with lanternlight so guests can linger long after the sun sets.

Lilac Couriers' Loft
While only technically being on the grounds by virtue of being up high in one of the towers that holds up the castle gates, the Couriers' Loft is an essential part of the castle's ecosystem as it's the place Rosavelle's messenger doves call home. The tower windows are always open to the wind and ribbons and charms tied to perches flutter in the draft as birds come and go, carrying letters to and from every corner of the island. A small staff of couriers and caretakers tends to the birds and visiting the loft is often as much about the view as the mail - on clear days, the whole kingdom stretches out beneath the tower.

Crownkeepers' Stables
Despite their name, the Crownkeeper's Stables far from formal and stuffy - sunlight filters through skylights onto polished stone floors, and the stalls are lined with enchanted wood that hums faintly with protective charms. This is the place the carriage horses of the crown can be found, along with a handful of rarer steeds gifted from abroad. Stablehands keep the place reasonably calm and tidy (or as best as they can manage with this many horses to tend to) and it's not unusual to see a curious noble or guest brushing a mane or sneaking a treat to their favorite animal.

Moonpetal Conservatory
Beyond the Everbloom's greenhouse lies a quieter, lesser-known structure where rare night-blooming flowers are cultivated, its domed roof veined with iron and glass. By day it looks simple enough - rows of pale greenery in clay pots - but when night falls, the entire conservatory glows with soft silver-blue light as petals unfurl in unison. Scholars and alchemists sometimes visit to study their properties, but for most guests, the appeal lies in wandering its moonlit paths and getting to know all the unusual plants you can find here.
